Adrian is an ethnomusicologist specialising in Hindustani music. His extensive work has been published widely, including the influential book “Inventing the Sarod.” Adrian’s research spans various areas, including Hindustani music theory, musical improvisation, cultural history, political economy, and the philosophy of music, and has been recognised with numerous awards, such as the Australian Research Council Post-Doctoral Fellowship and a creative fellowship at the State Library of Victoria.

Throughout his career, Adrian has held esteemed teaching positions at Macquarie University (Sydney), the University of Melbourne, and the University of Hong Kong. He served as Director of the Musicology and Ethnomusicology program at Monash University and was a visiting artist at the Australian National Academy of Music in 2024.

Adrian’s expertise in Hindustani music is rooted in extensive training under the guidance of renowned musicians, including Pandit Ashok Roy, Professor Sachindra Nath Roy, Dr. Ashok Ranade, Ustad Irfan Khan, and Prof Sanjoy Bandopadhyay. He has performed internationally at prestigious venues such as The India International Centre, Delhi; Habitat Centre, Delhi; Serendipity Festival Goa; Sydney Festival; Sydney Opera House; Melbourne Recital Centre; Musee Guimet Paris; and the Australian National Academy of Music. His performances have been broadcast on India National Radio and Television.

Adrian’s recordings in France, India, and Australia have gained significant recognition. His intercultural recording “Improvisations,” published by ABC/Universal Records, was an ARIA finalist and featured on Virgin Airlines, Royal Brunei Air, and other airlines’ inflight playlists.

Currently, Adrian holds the Dr. C.W.W. Visiting Professor position at the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Visual and Performing Arts, Colombo, Sri Lanka (2024-2027).
